It’s Good 2 Give provides practical support, in some ways the support may seem so simple and easy, but has had a massive effect and received very gratefully by the families involved.
Some of the things we do are:
All the essentials plus a little bit more for that unexpected stay in hospital. From shower gel to lip balm, packet of soft tissues to a notepad and pen. These packs cost £100 to make up but are invaluable to the person receiving.
£60 could buy 100 first class stamps so we can include some in the parents packs to send off any notes to friends and relatives.
Smoothies, icecream, fruit, cheese and biscuits: parents and patients need their energy at this hard time. These are readily available in ward 2’s kitchen, free of charge. It costs £300 per month to supply.
In 2013 we introduced ironing vouchers (max 4 per family) to give to parents to help with that often time consuming household task. We also help where we can with gardening maintenance for families whose children are in-patients. £30 per week would cover a family’s ironing, done by a recommended ironing company close to them.
A phone to call friends, or a laptop to keep on top of schoolwork, vital repairs to a car to keep the family mobile: we can’t promise but we always try. These costs do vary and we want to do as much as we can for the families.
Ever sat in a waiting room reading a magazine to find out the information its giving you is 2 years old? We provide magazines for the ward, ranging from home and lifestyle to sports and fitness to weekly gossip magazines. A Vogue subscription costs us approximately £40 and Home and Garden £29, easy read OK and No 1 Magazines are around £50. These are replenished on a regular basis and may need replaced due to infection control.
