Afternoon Tea

New Event! Afternoon Tea at the Roxburghe Hotel, Edinburgh

Posted by | Events | No Comments

What?    An afternoon tea event  organised by some of our Young Ambassadors

When?  Sunday 5 November 2-4pm with a pop up shopping area from 1-2pm – an ideal opportunity to start your Christmas shopping

Where? The Roxburghe Hotel, Charlotte Square, Edinburgh

Why?   We love organising events for our supporters and it is a wonderful way to raise funds for our small charity- although events are a huge amount of work, we love doing them and it is very important to us that our guests love attending!  The funds raised from today’s event will go to supporting our Ripple Retreat near Callander – a retreat for young cancer patients and their families where they can spend a few days away together in luxurious and relaxing surroundings.  Some of the funds raised will also go towards providing a defibrillator for the Callander area – our Young Ambassadors attend regular workshops and one of these workshops was an introduction to first aid.  At that workshop they learnt about the importance of defibrillators in saving lives and we all agreed it would be nice to provide a defibrillator to the area our Retreat is situated in.  The final decision on location will be left to  St John’s Scotland who we are dealing with.

How much?  £25 per person and that includes a glass of something sparkling!  (10% discount for booking a table of 10)

How do you get tickets?  Please go to our event brite page and you can book your spaces there.

I told you about the event Anne Baird organised for us at Craigie’s  – you can read about it (and see some photos) here

Yesterday I popped out to Craigie’s  to collect the cheque so I took Ellie along for company.

She thought it was a lovely place and for the short time she was there, got plenty attention!!

Anyway, here is the team photo for collecting the very lovely large (in every sense) cheque.

Thank you, John, Kirsteen, Anne and all the staff and customers at Craigie’s.  We very much appreciate your wonderful contribution to our fundraising.

Our first literary afternoon tea event

Posted by | Events, Special supporters | No Comments

Tickets now on sale for our first literary afternoon tea event – Sunday 2 October 2-4pm at the Caledonian Hotel, Princes Street, Edinburgh.

Such an incredible setting and fantastic food.

We have held many afternoon tea events at the Caley Hotel (I have fond memories of the Caley – when I was a very wee girl my dad used to take my brother and me to the station which was really part of the hotel and let us get a wee chocolate bar from the machine.  At christmas time there was an enormous – to me- with a trainset going round it.  Oh how my brother and I loved going there!).

Anyway, we love our afternoon tea events at the Caley and this one is the start of something a bit different for us.  Lin Anderson, crime writer, is going to be in conversation with our own Tonya Macari – chatting about her books and I am sure, lots else!

Considering we include a glass of something special (or two sometimes) with the sumptuous afternoon tea this is a bit of a bargain afternoon out.   For the price is just £25 per person.

If you’d like to come along on your own, with friends or family please get in touch and reserve a table.

We’d love to see you

Afternoon Tea at the Hilton Caledonian

Posted by | Events | No Comments

I have so much to tell you but you will have to wait – I am going to do it in little bites…

It’s been a hectic week or I would have told you all about our Afternoon Tea earlier!  What a triumph.  Rebecca and Robin at the Hilton Caledonian  look after us so well and the Pompadour room is simply made for elegant Afternoon Teas.  Our guest book is filled with compliments and most of the guests have re-booked for our Christmas Afternoon Tea.

How to paint a picture for you so you can feel as though you were there?  The Pompadour room has the most beautiful elegant wallpaper with birds – herons perhaps in a dusky pink and the arched windows overlook the Castle, Princes Street gardens and the West End.  Table sizes are from 2 right up to ten and set with starched white linen. Our guests are given champagne glasses filled with rose sparkling wine (or Bottlegreen soft drink if they are under 18 or non drinkers and it looks every bit as gorgeous and bubbly as the sparkling wine does) and the afternoon tea is delivered on old fashioned three tier silver stands – with little sandwiches on the bottom, scones and clotted cream and fruit cake in the middle and tiny beautiful mouthfuls of cakes on the top tier.  There is a choice of tea too – and plenty of refills.

I did a quick welcome (ok, maybe not ‘quick’ but not a long welcome) then our wonderful Tonya took over and introduced Marie from Fifi Wilson.  Marie described new trends and introduced our models who then wandered round the tables showing off the gorgeous clothes.  Our way of allowing the models to wander is very old fashioned – I remember only too well when I was a little girl going with my mum to Patrick Thomson’s store on North Bridge and being allowed to join her and my aunt for afternoon tea with models wandering around – actually I remember them often wearing fur coats and hats – not so pc now, I guess.  This method lets guests continue chatting with their friends and enjoying the foodie treats as well as being able to see the clothes up close and personal.

A charity event wouldn’t be complete without a raffle and ours are always special.  First prize was a £100 gift voucher from Fifi Wilson with a personal styling session with Marie out of hours to include a glass or two of champagne.  One of our good friends and s upporters won this voucher and we were all delighted for her.  Imagine our surprise and pleasure when she gave the voucher to one of the mums (from ward 2 at the Sick Kids).

By 4.30pm it was all over for another Afternoon Tea.  I had unwisely worn high heels and three hours of wearing them had me almost in tears!  lesson learnt there – flatties for me from now on.

It looks as though we have raised about £600 from this event which is fantastic – we will have a confirmed figure soon.

Meantime though many guests have booked for our Christmas Afternoon Tea on Sunday 4 December – but more of that later……

It’s really heartening to know that our first event is sold out!

Oh and of course so is our second – Blingo sold out in a matter of hours.  22 of 26 tables are paid in full so we really know where we are financially.  I keep on begging for goody bag items and sparking mineral water as the more we can get of items like that the less we spend and the more we bring into our coffers as our guests feel well pampered.  Sunday’s event – afternoon tea at the Hilton Caledonian is such a nice relaxed event and I am so looking forward to it.  Think I have everything I need for it.  Sparkling wine – check, Bottlegreen soft drink – check, prizes – check,  merchandise for sale – check, list of our lovely guests – check.  Have they all paid?  Almost!  Our models are going for fittings in the next couple of days – its the very latest stock they will be wearing – Marie at Fifi Wilson is just waiting on it all arriving from London.

Today is a day full of event planning – the Afternoon Tea, Blingo (need a lot more prizes for this event!  and 500 choc bars too ), the Fashion Show and our very first Ball.  My head is spinning from all that there is to do and that is on top of working on my fundraising plan for 2011/12.   As the aim is to raise £200k this year I need to focus on encouraging others to join me in fundraising!  I have found a perfect Word template to put my event plans on and am learning Bento for the Mac too – its a great tool and once I have mastered it will save me carrying around a load of paperwork – just need the gorgeous Ipad!
