Nurturing Minds and Well-being: Our Impact on Psychology Services

For the past three years in Edinburgh and two years in Glasgow, It's good 2 give has been a proud funder of vital psychology services, and the advancements they've made are truly remarkable. These dedicated psychologists are making a tangible difference in the lives of young people and parents, addressing emotional well-being alongside physical health. By having the It's good 2 give psychologists, it has meant that almost twice the number of individual psychology sessions have been able to be offered to young people and their parents as needed, using evidence-based therapies to support them to cope during and after their cancer treatment.

We provide this vital support after a suggestion by teenager Joanna Lamb, who was a trustee of our charity at the time. Joanna had been undergoing treatment for bone cancer and tragically lost her leg to the disease. Through her own experience, she keenly felt the profound need for psychological support for young cancer patients.

Sadly, Joanna died before we were able to agree on her idea and work with NHS Lothian and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to put it in place. However, we are immensely proud to have done so in her memory and know she would be proud of what we are now able to offer young cancer patients. Her family continues to fundraise and support us, keeping her vision alive.

The psychologists have innovated and implemented incredibly helpful resources, including self-help support guides for managing low mood and for siblings, and a unique sleep kit designed specifically for teens and children to promote better sleep, both in the hospital environment and at home. Recognising the importance of self-worth, they have also organised impactful self-esteem workshops and creative Beads of Life therapeutic groups, all fully funded by It's good 2 give. These initiatives provide crucial emotional support, coping mechanisms, and a sense of community for young patients.

The work of these psychologists is invaluable, offering holistic care that goes beyond medical treatment. We are committed to continuing our support for these vital services, and that's why your ongoing support for my new fundraising challenge is so incredibly important. Together, we can ensure these essential programmes continue to thrive and reach even more children and families.
