A Bittersweet Farewell: Celebrating Sylvia's 15 Years of Plant Sales for It's good 2 give
Sometimes, the most profound connections are forged in the toughest of times. Seventeen years ago, I met Sylvia and her family when her daughter, Jennifer, was undergoing cancer treatment. I remember a long day trip we took with Jennifer and another teenager and a mum to visit the Scottish artist Jolomo in his Argyll studio. We talked for hours that day, and I learned so much about the hidden side effects of treatment that I hadn't known before.
Jennifer sadly passed away in March 2010, not long after we established It's good 2 give. Her family, with incredible generosity of spirit, was keen to support our charity in her memory. Sylvia, a passionate gardener, came up with a wonderful idea: an annual plant sale held in her hometown of Cupar in Fife.
With the help of Sylvia's parents, also keen gardeners, and a wide network of family, friends, and the local community, the plant sale quickly blossomed. People would grow plants, donate gardening items, and volunteer their time on the day itself. Over these past 15 years, we've seen all kinds of Scottish weather – from baking sun to torrential rain and blustery winds – but it has never dampened the spirit of the day. The volunteers and customers always turn up in their droves, a testament to the quality of the plants and the warmth of the community.
This year, 2025, marks Sylvia's final year of plant sales. Family reasons mean it's time for her to retire, and while we're sad to see this chapter close, we couldn't be more grateful. To Sylvia, Chris, Christy and Joanne, your unwavering support since 2010 has been truly remarkable. Your wonderful efforts have raised close to £30,000, every penny of which has been put to good use supporting young cancer patients, just like Jennifer.
From all of us at It's good 2 give, and on behalf of the many families you've helped, we wish you a long and very happy retirement. Thank you for everything.
