From Dream to Reality: building our Retreat for Young Cancer Patients

Ever wondered how a dream becomes a reality? Today, I'm taking you back in time to the early days of It's good 2 give, our charity dedicated to supporting young cancer patients and their families. Join me as we revisit the incredible journey of building our Ripple Retreat, a haven of peace and hope nestled in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.

The Spark of Inspiration:

In 2010, Ian and I embarked on a mission – to create a special retreat where young cancer patients and their families could find respite and joy. Fundraising became my battle cry, while Ian scoured for the perfect piece of land. After countless events and near misses, a stroke of luck led us to David and Jean, who generously donated a stunning acre of land overlooking Loch Lomond.

Building with Vision and Heart:

But the journey wasn't without its hurdles. Planning permission near the loch was a challenge, but with the help of the National Park and architect Tony Kettle, we envisioned a retreat that blended seamlessly with its surroundings. The rippling roof, mirroring the loch's surface, became my personal favourite – a testament to human ingenuity and craftsmanship.

Facing Challenges with Courage:

Just as things were looking up, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The experience fueled my determination even further, reminding me of the strength needed by young cancer patients and their families. With the support of incredible volunteers and proactive trustees, work began in 2015. John Dennis, our contractors, built the retreat "at book," a remarkable act of generosity.

Tears, Laughter, and Grand Openings:

The build wasn't for the faint of heart! I may have provided enough drama for Grand Designs with my tears, disappointments, and impatience though they wouldn’t feature us as not a residential property. But there were moments of pure joy, like being featured on Great British Menu and having Grant Stott and Lorraine Kelly open the Retreat in 2017. Ian project managed the build for It’s good 2 give liaising with the builder, architect and dozens of suppliers.

A Legacy of Love:

The timelapse video I'm sharing captures the magic of our journey – from the foundations to the grand opening. It's a testament to the love poured in by countless individuals – from us (Ian and Lynne) , David and Jean to Tony, the builders, volunteers, and supporters who conquered Kilimanjaro and Kiltwalks in the rain. And so many more it is too hard to mention them all.

This is just the beginning of our story. In the coming weeks, I'll share more tales about the Ripple Retreat and the incredible families we've served. Join us on this journey of hope, resilience, and the unwavering spirit of humanity.
