Joyce's first months heading the Ripple Retreat team
It’s hard to believe that four months have already passed since I began my role as Manager at The Ripple Retreat. In that time, I’ve had the privilege of immersing myself in the unique spirit of this very special place, working alongside a growing, strengthening team and welcoming the many wonderful people who create the beating heart of The Ripple Retreat.
From day one, it’s been about building the right structures – not only in terms of management but also in people. We have brought together a dedicated professional team who each play their part in ensuring The Ripple Retreat remains a safe, beautiful, and welcoming space available to the many families in need of the space, time, peace and tranquility. Volunteers, new and long-standing, are key in the ongoing success of The Ripple Retreat, each giving of their time, to carry out jobs such as tending gardens, greeting families, supporting each of the Management Team in the many, many tasks required on a weekly basis. Their commitment is inspiring.
One highlight has been the return of Bill the Bull – refreshed, repainted, and standing proudly once more at the Retreat. We had the wonderful task of painting Bill, this was a creative moment that brought volunteers, staff, and supporters together, symbolising the strength and colour we aim to bring into the lives of our visiting families.
On a personal level, I sat (and passed!) my IOSH exam – quite possibly as the oldest candidate in the room! This was both a challenge and a proud achievement, giving me renewed confidence as we continue to embed best practice in health and safety across the Retreat.
Every week has brought new faces – from suppliers and contractors who help us maintain the highest standards, to the families who bring life and love to the building. Meeting these families is a constant reminder of why this place exists. Their courage and gratitude are humbling, and it is an honour to play even a small part in their time here.
Over these four months, I’ve been reading through policies and procedures, learning the systems already in place, and now I feel ready to shape and create my own management style to support and guide the Retreat into its next chapter.
I am incredibly grateful to the fantastic team around me – our truly inspiring Co-Founder, Lynne McNicoll, the Board of Its good 2 give, staff, volunteers and supporters – who have given me such encouragement and commitment. Together, we are ensuring The Ripple Retreat remains a place of comfort, safety, and joy for every person who crosses its threshold.
There have been so many laughs, so many stories to hear and to share and some of the best hugs I have ever had. The unique feeling working at the Ripple Retreat is knowing and witnessing on a daily basis, the genuine want to be there by each and every person.
It truly is a privilege to be part of It’s good 2 give and to have been entrusted with the responsibility of managing The Ripple Retreat. Here’s to the next chapter – building on what we have achieved and continuing to create memories to last.
